We are super excited to have started working with West Yorkshire Spinners. They are one of the few wool companies to work exclusively in Britain with the fibre coming exclusively from British sheep and the spinning taking place in their mill in Keighley. They are also award winning having won the Best British Yarn brand at the 2014 British Knitting Awards. The sourcing of local fibre means the yarn has a low carbon footprint and enables them to keep costs low making the yarn an affordable introduction to British knitting. All their yarns have a high wool content with some coming from specific sheep breeds such as Blue Faced Leicester allowing them to make the most of the unique features of each breed.
We are initially stocking 4 of their yarn ranges but are hoping to expand this in the future. I’m planning to talk about each range separately and today it’s the Aire Valley Aran Fusions. This yarn is a blend of 75% wool and 25% nylon and knits to a standard Aran tension of 24 rows x 18 stitches. It is also very affordable at £5 for a 100g ball with 200m on each ball.
It is available in 5 colours, each one containing a range of harmonious shades. These knit up in gently blended stripes keeping even plain stocking stitch knitting interesting. The colours are from left to right; Coffee and Cream, Autumn Mix, Moorland Mix, Autumn Forest and Grey Mix.
There is a great scarf pattern that goes with the range priced at £2.4o featuring textured moss stitch and cables. This is a very effective and complex looking pattern however it only has an 8 row repeat making it relatively easy to memorise. I couldn’t resist casting one on myself! I’ll be sharing some photos on our Facebook page when it’s finished.
