I would like to say a huge THANK YOU to everyone who helped make our 3rd Birthday Stitch Up such a wonderful day. You came from far and wide to shop and celebrate. It was lovely to see so many familiar faces as well as plenty of new ones. Thank you to our stall holders, Rosies’ Moments and Sparkleduck for bringing such a gorgeous array of goodies to tempt us. To Liz, Mandy and Rosie who baked the delicious cakes we enjoyed. There was barely a crumb left by the end of the day! To my parents without whom none of this would have happened.
But most of all, thank you to all of you who took the time to visit. I always wanted Stitch Solihull to be a community, somewhere all crafters would feel welcome regardless of age or ability and I feel you have truly made that dream possible.I did manage to indulge in a little bit of shopping myself. The top 2 yarns are destined to be socks. The gradient skeins are going to be accents for a shawl, possibly On the Spice Market by Melanie Berg. As for the 2 at the bottom left, they’re waiting to tell me what they want to be and in the mean time are by my desk to be stroked occasionally!
I would love to see any photos you have of the day or of your purchases. If you have a plan for them, let me know too, I’m always after inspiration!
Our next event is Yarn Shop Day on Saturday April 30th. This annual cerebration of Local Yarn Shops, in association with Lets’ Knit Magazine, is now in its third year and promises to be another great day. Watch this space for more details on what to expect…
It’s a gloriously sunny Good Friday and we are open today from 10-5. Unfortunately, the sunshine is not set to continue into the Easter weekend but never fear, we have lots of kits and projects to keep the kids entertained on a wet bank holiday.
Buttoonies are an ingenious use of buttons and pre cut foam shapes to make up into a wide variety of creations from pirates to penguins via pigs, sheep and birds. They are scored for difficulty on a scale of 1-10 and at just £4 each, it would be great fun to collect the whole set.
Fabulous Pompoms by Alistair MacDonald contains 20 projects using the pom poms to make everything from Easter chicks to bunnies and bunting. Using the clever Clover Pompom makers just about anyone can make a pompom and we have them in sizes from 2-11cm.
Gifts in a Tin
Gifts in a Tin are beautifully presented in a hight quality tin and are a perfect introduction to sewing for young children. They contain a mostly assembled creature with designs including lambs, puppies and teddy bears that just need stuffing and sewing closed. Most kits also contain an accessory to add play value such as a feeding bottle for the lambs. They allow for quick results while still leaving a feeling of achievement.
For older children there are also sock animals in a tin. These are complete kits with needles, thread and comprehensive photo instructions. Just cut up the sock and sew back together to make your own companion, be it zebra, monkey or owl! All Gifts in a Tin cost £10 except for the smaller sock owl which is just £6.
Juko Designs weaving kits contain everything you need to weave either a bracelet or a bag. The cardboard loom comes ready warped so is all ready to go and full colour instructions are also included. Bracelet kits cost £10 and make 2 bracelets while bag kits cost £14 and show you how to work in the round so there’s no sewing up later.
Fat Cat Cross Stitch Kits are a prefect introduction to the craft for those with no prior experience. They have bold designs with block colours and comprehensive instructions. The Easy Peasy kits contain easy to stitch binca and thick tapestry wool for younger children while the Sew Simple kits contain aida and embroidery cotton allowing for slightly more detailed designs. The kits cost between £6.95 and £7.95.
Stitch Solihull is turning 3! I know, I don’t believe it either. Where has the time gone? To celebrate, we’re having a party. Our 3rd Birthday Stitch Up will be held on Saturday April 9th from 11-4.We are being joined in our celebrations by independent yarn dyers Rosies’ Moments and Sparkleduck. They will be bringing an array of irresistible hand dyed yarny goodness which is sure to brighten your day. How could you resist all that colour? We will be Stitching and Sipping all day and it wouldn’t be a birthday without cake too. Bring your works in progress and compare purchases in a friendly, social space. I’m going to sort out some special offers on End of Line yarns and fabrics too. We’d love this to be a really special day so please tell all your friends or better still bring them with you! I have created a Facebook event which can be shared via Social Media or why not send them a link to this blog post? We’d love you to help us make this the best birthday ever!
We’ve had lots of new yarns, buttons and gift ideas delivered recently. The shop has also had a spring refresh to make room for all the new stock allowing us to stock more fabric and yarn than ever before! One of the new yarns is Cozy Soft Prints by Ella Rae.
Ella Rae is an Australian yarn and pattern brand famed for quality, affordable yarns and simple, classic pattern designs. Cozy Soft Prints is a Double Knit yarn composed of 75% acrylic and 25% super wash wool. It can be machine washed at 30 making it perfect for baby and child garments. It retails at £6 per 100g ball which has just under 200m on it making it very affordable.
We have 9 variegated colour ways that consist of a range of coordinating colours. This makes the finished garments fun and eye catching. There is great pattern support as well. There are 4 individual patterns that cost £3 each. They are all sized from 3 months to 5 years and take between 1 and 4 balls of yarn depending on design and age knitted. There is also an accompanying pattern book, Cozy Soft Booklet 123. This contains 6 patterns for ages 3 months to 8 years. It costs £6 which works out at just £1/pattern! None of the garments use more than 5 balls of yarn which means they are an affordable and fun way to knit for the small people in your life.
The latest addition to Bergere de France’s range of Spring/Summer yarns is Paradou. It joins Reflet, Bigarelle, Coton Fifty and Ecoton as one of our standard stock yarns and is perfect for warm weather garments and accessories as well as for those who can’t wear wool. There are 10 shades divided into cool neutrals and eye catching brights including blues, oranges and yellow. Each colour is shot through with a gold or iridescent thread which gives it a subtle sparkle when it catches the light. The yarn has both cotton and linen blended in which all take the dye slightly differently making the yarn appear multi-hued.
Composition: 41% acrylic, 37% cotton, 11% linen. 10% viscose, 1% polyester
Ball size: 50g/135m
There is excellent pattern support in Magazines 184 and 185, the new Spring/Summer pattern books for adults and children. These are a few of the garments in Paradou from Mag 184 which also features designs for men and women in the other summer yarns. If you would like to get hold of a free copy of this pattern book worth £7.25, we are hosting a special coffee morning on Thursday March 10th from 11-1.
It is free to attend and all attendees will get a free pattern book as well as a first chance to view sample garments from the latest collections. We are also offering 15% off all Bergere de France yarn, patterns and accessories purchased or ordered on the day. To reserve your space, please give us a call on 0121 314 6888 or drop us an email.
The latest fabric range to drive in store is Bohemia by Makower. Bohemia is a modern, eye catching collection infused with traditional folk inspiration. We have the 5 fabrics from the Daylight colour way which are sure to turn heads.I think my favourite is the large floral (bottom left) but I would also love a skirt made with the lace bird print (bottom right).
The fabrics retail at £14/m with fat quarters at £3.50 or a fat quarter bundle with 1 fat quarter of each fabric and 1m of coordinating ribbon for £17.50.If you need inspiration, there is a free quilt pattern designed by Lynne Goldsworthy of Lily’s Quilts. This quilt finishes at 60″ square but I think one of the motifs would also make a fabulous cushion if you want a smaller project. We can help you put a kit together with everything you need to make this quilt. Please ask for more details. If you’re unsure or in need of a refresher about how to work with templates and appliqué, I am running a Dresden Plate Workshop which will give you all the skills you need to tackle this quilt.
