New Fabric: Bohemia by Makower

The latest fabric range to drive in store is Bohemia by Makower. Bohemia is a modern, eye catching collection infused with traditional folk inspiration. We have the 5 fabrics from the Daylight colour way which are sure to turn heads.1657_Q_large floral_Fotor_CollageI think my favourite is the large floral (bottom left) but I would also love a skirt made with the lace bird print (bottom right).

The fabrics retail at £14/m with fat quarters at £3.50 or a fat quarter bundle with 1 fat quarter of each fabric and 1m of coordinating ribbon for £17.50.Bohemia_PatternIf you need inspiration, there is a free quilt pattern designed by Lynne Goldsworthy of Lily’s Quilts. This quilt finishes at 60″ square but I think one of the motifs would also make a fabulous cushion if you want a smaller project.  We can help you put a kit together with everything you need to make this quilt. Please ask for more details.82277-46053c200e0645b6942de552c32e8aef.jpegIf you’re unsure or in need of a refresher about how to work with templates and appliqué, I am running a Dresden Plate Workshop which will give you all the skills you need to tackle this quilt.

The full timetable can be downloaded as a PDF by clicking the highlighted text or you can pick up a printed copy in store.

Crochet Classes

Last week I took you through a summary of the beginners classes that we offer. If you missed it, you can catch up here. This week, I thought I’d provide details of the other crochet classes that we run. We are very lucky to work with Denise from Peeko Crochet for our classes. Denise is a very experienced tutor and an expert in all things crochet from amigurumi to Tunisian lace! You can read more about her inspirations and how she learnt to crochet in our interview with her here.

Granny Squares

This class is the follow up to Beginners Crochet allowing you to use the stitches you learnt in new ways. The Granny Square is probably the most well known crochet design and is used in everything from blankets to cushions. It has a real shabby chic vibe making it perfect for use in vintage inspired projects or make it modern by changing to a funky, bright colour scheme.FullSizeRender.jpg

The class will also cover other shapes based on the same principle. How about a Granny Heart or Triangle? If you’re feeling inspired we still have a few places available this Saturday afternoon from 2-4:30, places cost £30.

Next Steps Crochet

If you’ve seen a fabulous pattern but are struggling with the instructions, this is the perfect class for you. Bring along your pattern and stitch queries and have them solved. From the basics of amigurumi to a complex shawl, we can help. This class is designed so that you can attend it more than once and still learn something new each time.

Tunisian Crochet

Have you ever seen a really long crochet hook and wondered what it is for? This class will solve that mystery and more! Tunisian Crochet is a sort of crochet-knitting hybrid, on one row you work multiple stitched on to the hook and then on the next row you work them off again.82277-e42bb52743da467ca82863db5117cb11-3

The resulting fabric is something quite unique in its own right. This class is suitable for those who have never tried Tunisian Crochet before as well as those who already have some knowledge and want to learn different stitches or how to follow a pattern.

Christmas Competition Results

A huge thank you to everyone who entered our Christmas Decoration Competition. We had many beautiful entries and the skill and passion demonstrated was great to see.IMG_1172 Having so many bright decorations hanging everywhere cheered me up no end on some of the grey mornings we’ve been having.

IMG_1173There could only be one overall winner though, and that was the knitted wreath by Mandy. It attracted so many positive comments and the amount of detail was incredible. Mandy has chosen a place on one of our Next Steps Crochet workshops as her prize and I’m sure she will have a great time.

Don’t forget we are open this Monday and Tuesday for any last minute purchases. We are also open 10-2 on Christmas Eve.  We will reopen at 10am on Saturday December 27th with a fabulous sale and yarn from £2! There will also be Stitch and Sip as usual from 11-1.

Merry Christmas to you all. I hope Santa brings you everything you asked for!

New Course Schedule

I am pleased to announce that the course schedule for the remainder of 2014 is now available. This sees the return of many of our most popular classes including Beginners Crochet and the Introduction to Machine Patchwork and Quilting.

Due to popular demand, the timetable sees the return of Free Machine Embroidery classes with Claire Muir. Claire is an amazingly talented textile artist and we are really lucky to have her working with us. In the Beginners Free Machine Embroidery class, you will be introduced to the techniques involved and the wide range of applications for them. This class is great value at £30 and includes all your materials.

Children’s Courses Summer 2014!

Morning Stitchers!

Thank you all so much for the overwhelming number of survey responses we received about Children’s Workshops. You’ve given us a valuable insight into the kinds of things your children want to learn, price range, and also children’s age ranges so that we can tailor the courses appropriately! There were many wonderful suggestions for activites, but we do have to stay true to who we are, and so we have stuck with the textile based suggestions. Workshops have been scheduled on weekdays, and last for one hour. As it is difficult to teach enough for the skill to be useful in just one hour, we have made some of the courses into 2 week courses, so that it is worthwhile!

We are excited to announce that we will be offering three different workshops throughout the summer. These are:

  • T Shirt Design
  • Sewing Skills
  • French Knitting

T Shirt Design

Bring along a plain t-shirt, and we’ll help children transform it into a work of art using buttons, ric rac, ribbon and more! This will be a one off session, priced at £7.50, which we have split into two different age groups – age 6-10 and age 10-14.

In week 2, we will be using the knitted strips to create items such as snails, monsters, coasters and pots! All materials are provided. The cost of this workshop is £15 for 2 one hour sessions. This course is suitable for children age 6-11.

We are now accepting bookings for these courses, which can be done by phone on 0121 314 6888 or you can book online at

We look forward to seeing your small people on a course soon!

Sale stock & upcoming workshops

Morning Stitchers,

We still have some sale stock available. It’s all still listed on the online shop and it’s still out for you to look in store. There’s a few bits of easyknits left, plus some Malabrigo (especially chunky) and UK Alpaca DK. There’s also a few fat quarters in Full Moon Lagoon, Kitschenette and Christmas fabrics available.

We’ve also got a couple of spaces left on our workshops this weekend. We have Introduction to Patchwork & Quilting on Saturday from 10am to 1pm and costs £30 including materials. All you need is to be confident at using a sewing machine for basic sewing and plenty of enthusiasm! You’ll get to choose your own co-ordinating set of fabric & thread to make a basic patchwork sampler with Ana. She’ll introduce you to techniques for cutting, stitching and piecing your quilt together.

Or if you fancy something else, we have spaces on our Beginner’s Drop Spindle workshop on Saturday from 2pm to 4.30pm for £30 including drop spindle and fibre. Michelle will teach you the basics for drafting fibre, allowing you to spin the fibre into a single strand of yarn using the park & draft method, and then ply the yarn to leave with your own mini skein of handspun yarn!  It’s guaranteed to leave you hooked, and  no doubt you’ll be looking into spinning wheels as soon as you get home!

Both courses can be booked online or you can give us a call on 0121 314 6888. Payment is required at the time of booking. Please let us know if you have any dietary requirements!

Anyway, I’d love to know what you’ve all been working on lately. I’ve just finished knitting a shawl called Semele. It’s constructed slightly differently, in that it’s knit sideways rather like a scarf. The lovely thing about this is that you don’t have to cast off 400+ stitches at the end! I also love it because you can make your yarn go a long way; you keep increasing, until you have just over half of your yarn left. Do a straight section, and then start decreasing! I’ve knit quite a few shawls and always end up with loads of yarn leftover, but I used as much as possible for this one. Sadly, the yarn isn’t available in our shop (as much as I would love that!) but over the summer I will look into dyeing gradience sets….that will be fun! You can knit it in anything from lace weight to worsted. You could even go heavier if you were brave enough!

Here’s the finished shawl anyway. It’s huge!
